GPIO Ribbon Extension Cable for HATs and Mini HATs

This handy 40 pin GPIO extender cable lets you put a bit of distance between your Raspberry Pi and your favourite HAT - useful for positioning sensors away from your Pi and for building epic mounts!

When using a GPIO extender it's important to connect the GPIO header on your Pi to the HAT the right way round to avoid damage to Pi and/or HAT. There's a white line down one side of the cable you can use to help keep track of where the power pins are. If you're unsure, you could use a multimeter to check the 5v pin is where you expect.

Features

  • 40-pin male and female GPIO connectors
  • 20cm cable length

I plopped the Weather HAT onto a Pi 3B using the ribbon extension cable to mitigate processor heat. I've been getting good data now for a couple of weeks in my middle school tech class as I teach kids about weather metrics--a lead-in to a larger discussion about climate and people. Measuring for an enclosure in the photo.

Extends the GPIO of my Zero 2 W and allows me to use an Enviro board without the CPU temperature affecting the temperature sensor on the Enviro board. It even fit into the Argon Pod GPIO cut-out, albeit with a little force. YMMV with the case, or others, I just seemed to get a good one. Picked the cable up on the cheap and it does the job; has a nice quality to it.

Well, it's an extension cable - there's little more to be added other than it's a bit stiff and difficult to manipulate. I wanted it to separate my DAC from my Pi to fit in a sweetiepie touchscreen pro case but it wasn't very satisfactory.

When fitting male side. You need to be careful and line up the header correctly. But other than that works great. Used on a pistorm project to allow me to use a pi 3b+ instead of 3a normally used in the pistorm.

I purchased a few of these to create some separation between Enviro+ and Weather HATs and their attached Raspberry PIs. Why? The heat generated by the PIs during standard operations can throw off the temperature sensors. Well made, durable and 'built for purpose.' However, a word to the wise if you are planning on using these with a Pibow - or another Raspberry Pi case - you will need to add extended headers as the connectors on both ends of the cable are quite chunky and won't fit.

Great cable, A+, would buy again etc. BUT...! I wanted to plug this into the top of a Pi Zero W, and the underneath of a DAC hat mounted separately in an enclosure. The plug was too wide to fit between the standoffs which the DAC was mounted on. Absolutely not a problem with the cable, a problem with my own common sense... and maybe mentioning it will help someone else learn from my mistake! Yeah, I tried to cut the plug down and broke it. Again, not a problem with the cable, a problem with my own skills (or lack thereof). Maybe I'll leave stuff alone in future.

Nice flexible ribbon with one white strand to show the orientation of the GPIO output. Great for using with HATs or PHATs which have temperature sensors affected by the heat from the Pi! Thanks, Pimoroni!
